“Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck”
— Dalai Lama XIV
We celebrate the auspicious number 8, which is ingrained in Chinese culture and philosophy. This number is revered for its association with wealth, prosperity, and success, making it a significant element in our design and philosophy. Throughout Chivitr, you’ll notice subtle references to the number 8, from the octagonal pillars forming grand walkways to the eight suites and four luxurious residences. These architectural features reflect our appreciation for Chinese culture and create a harmonious and fortuitous environment for you.
In Chinese numerology, the number 8 is considered the luckiest due to its pronunciation, “ba,” which sounds similar to “fa,” meaning prosperity or wealth. This phonetic similarity has led to the widespread belief that the number 8 brings good fortune and success. In business and commerce, numbers with multiple eights are highly valued, often fetching high prices for phone numbers and license plates. The 2008 Beijing Olympics famously started at 8:08:08 PM on 8 August, highlighting the cultural significance of this number.
The veneration of the number 8 in Chinese culture dates back centuries, with its significance extending to various aspects of life, including architecture, business, and personal choices. The use of octagonal shapes in traditional Chinese architecture symbolises balance and harmony, reflecting the cyclical nature of the universe. In feng shui, octagons enhance positive energy flow, or chi, contributing to a more auspicious environment. At Chivitr, we incorporate octagonal shapes, from the pillars that form covered walkways to the dining areas under the stars. These architectural elements create a visually stunning environment and reflect our belief in the lucky nature of the number 8.
Everything we do at Chivitr is thoughtfully considered, with the number 8 often woven into our activities and events. We host special events on dates that include the number 8, such as 8 August, to align with its energy. In our neighbouring dining venue, Samut, Chef Thitid “Ton” Tassanakajohn offers eight-course meals that honour the cultural significance of this number. Our wellness classes, including meditation and yoga, are often scheduled to reflect the balance and harmony of the number 8. These activities are all set within the architectural elements, seamlessly integrating philosophy and practice. By incorporating the number 8 into many aspects of our retreat, we aim to provide a holistic experience that resonates with the principles of prosperity and balance.
